Do you know that the difficulty with writing a book isn’t getting published? Now, with more than your fair share of ways than ever to become an author, the most difficult part of writing now isn’t actually publishing. It’s writing the book in the first place.
As the author of two published books, I can tell you that the hardest part of the writing life is sitting down and doing the work. Books just can't write themselves, after all. You have to invest the time and all you have into creating this important piece of work — to do that requires discipline.
When I dreamed of writing my first book, I believed I had important things to say, things the world needed to hear. Looking back on what it took to actually become a published author, I realize the process was completely different from my expectations.
To start, you don’t just sit and write a book. That’s a complete misrepresentation of the real writing process. You begin writing a sentence, then writing a paragraph, then if you’re lucky, you'll write an entire chapter. Writing happens in fits and starts and in little bits and parts. Just stick with it. Once you make the goal, stick with it. You'll be glad you did!
